Best personal investment option?

Its a question of risk verses return. Safe is in a bank

account, but very tiny returns. Risk is investing in a

single stock hoping it will go up. For a small risk with

good returns, I like Vanguard Wellington Fund or

some of Vanguards other low cost funds.

first read two books 'a random walk down wall street" and mutal funds" by john bogle.that will give you a good start

I'm currently 25 years old and starting to look into saving for retirement. I currently have around $5,000 in "savings" just sitting in a checking account that I rarely use. This is separate from my real checking account which pays the daily/monthly bills.

My question is with $5,000 what is the best personal investment options for me? I want something safe with guaranteed (or very close to guaranteed) returns. In other words, I don't want to lose it all by the time I'm 40.
