What's the easiest way to set up an account to buy shares, I am looking to spend the smallest amount per share as I am just wanting to get the jist of things.

1. Choose an execution only broker.

2. Make contact and open an account.

3. Subscribe funds.

4. Do research and choose stocks.

5. Contact broker and give instructions.

However, your plan to invest the smallest amount per share is not economically viable if the investment amount per trade will be less than 75 times the dealing cost e.g. £750 for £10 dealing cost.

You can buy stocks cheaply through either a low load broker like E-trade or similar. It becomes very expensive to buy stocks in small quantities. If you want that experience, then just do it on paper and track you results.

For low amount investing, look at no-load mutual funds.

you need a stockbroker someone who is licenced to trade in stocks and shares now there are all sorts of intermediates like banks investment companies that have sticky fingers in between but if you can afford it deal with the organ grinder not the monkey's
