It depends what your level of expertise is. If you know absolutely nothing about the stock market - prepare to be eaten alive.
Lots of people have this stupid idea that they invest a few beans in some random company - and become overnight bazzillionaires. While it would be nice if it were to happen like that, everybody would be doing it - so we'd certainly have an inflation problem.
IF you understand the market, IF you invest in the right company, IF you are fully up to date with research into your investment, IF you pick the right moment, IF we assume nothing unexpected happens to devalue your investment, it's just possible that you might make a small return. (LOT OF 'IFs' HERE!
Get educated in the Stock Market. It might be worth it, but you absolutely need to know what you're doing first.
If you want a return that will outpace inflation investing in equities is the best answer. On average the S&P 500 has returned about 8.5% to 9% a year. Small caps have returned the best at about 12% a year on average. These are based on the last 30 years. Right now the S&P is up and small caps are down. Buy small portions of each through an indexed ETF and you will be fine.
The stock market is very altruistic. By 25 1/2, I had accumulated over a million dollars from a system I had setup. I had already programmed software to send me precise signals. I don't think this would ever be possible in the "investing" sense because most methodology relies on buy and hold whereas this was all about precision. To answer your question, the stock market is definitely worth it if you can find your niche!
