Is investing my money in a rolex a good idea?

You are kidding right?

Maybe invest in an iPad and hope it will go up in value. Right? Not! A Rolex is not all that different.

Think about it. You expect to buy a used Rolex for 2k, that originally sold for 6k. It is already going down. Why would it go up? Rolex seldom go up in value, except on TV. Any watch collector web site can confirm what I have told you.

Only a seller would suggest you do such a thing.

Online? You are again kidding right? Do you even know how to "whois" a site before you hand over a credit card number? That is what I thought. 84% of sites are scams, and you do not know how to look up the site owner, or anything? How do you know the site was not created just last week, if you do not know how to look that information up?

Also, if you are under 30 wearing a Rolex will make people think you are gay. Seriously they will. Go to any watch collector forum and ask. I would not say that to pick on you.

While you are at it look up "whois", and learn why you should know this stuff.

Yes absolutely - another very good investment is antique gold coins of the Spanish kind.

A few years ago I got really lucky with a small investment. I was passing an art gallery in Mayfair and in the window was a postcard sized Lowry for £1,000 - could not resist it and bought it on the spot - it's now valued at around £5,000 cannot do so well putting money in the bank where it just rots away, if you ask me.

Good luck - make a killing.

no,,, gosh,, some people are never going to make it in life

ex: you pay 10,000 for the watch,,, you would be lucky to turn around and sell it for 4,000 (lucky).

That is not an investment

something tells me your parents are not good with money either

NO.....

Typical Rolex watches will retain value better than most other watches. ONLY rare and collectable models will increase in value. Others, just retain little better. New Rolex Datejust will go for about 8000 dollars. You may sell it for half to 60% at best in future. These are hardly rare.

Old collectables are well beyond your ability to purchase in the first place.

DO NOT buy Rolex online unless you know the seller. There are so many fakes and questionable pieces, your chances of getting a genuine high quality ones are against you. Even real, online Rolex are not properly imported. Rolex, the company, does not sell to online vendors, so all watches you see are either second-hand, or something the company bought on questionable route. For those watches, the company will not warranty the piece or even fix it at your own expense. Please be very careful.

Yes, it is a good idea.

BUT, you will not get a genuine, new one for half price!!

Some models are better investments than others so I suggest a little research first.

Isn't the Oyster the most popular one?

Please be careful of buying off the internet unless it is Rolex Genuine site.

Anyone you will be much better going to a reputable Rolex dealer and discussing your purchase with an expert.

Other than that, good idea! At least it will hedge against inflation, will look good and tell you the time.

Personally, I would save it all and add to it. Then when out of college and in a good profession, I would buy a better one. There are some professions where a good Rolex or just as good of a name, looks good, appropriate, and is an 'advertisement' to prospective clients that you are successful.

2 grand wont buy you Rolex, more like 5-7 grand for the pre-owned piece.

You would better start putting money into your personal pension

I am a 18 year old student, and I have 2 well paid part time jobs. I recently hit my big 18th birthday, after much disscussion with family I have been given some money to put towards some 'jewery' not a new xbox one or ps4, but something that shouldn't devalue over time. I looked at watches brand new in shops and saw them going for less than half when used online. I then disscussed with family more about my money 'investment' and came to the conclusion that maybe buying an authentic rolex watch would be a good thing, I am going to be putting most of the money towards it, probably spending around £2,000 on a nice looking rolex watch. Is that a good idea?
