What are stocks? And how can I get involved?

I want to learn about the stock market. What is a good starting place to get my foot into the door?

Do a google search for "stock investing strategies" or something similar and read many of the articles that pop up on your screen. You could self-teach yourself that way or you can pay to meet with a financial adviser. Stocks are basically little pieces of a company that are bought and sold (both called trading) between individuals and companies. Now, go seek knowledge.

I tell everyone that to begin trading, you need a basic understanding of accounting, finance, and fundamental analysis.

For accounting & finance I recommend the book: "Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing the Numbers." For fundamental analysis I recommend the book: "Warren Buffett's 3 Favorite Books."

Investopedia.com is also a good, free source to learn about trading. It has short, interesting video tutorials.

Read a bit into the sections available on Investopedia, and some general stock market books you can find in the library. Once you think you have an idea of how buying and selling stocks work, create a faux portfolio on Yahoo! or Google, and attempt to invest for practice.

Once you have an idea of how the system works, you should look into chart patterns, and analyze stocks to attempt to figure out what stocks are good to invest in.

Read a couple of JIm Cramer's investment books before you do ANYTHING foolish.

It you cant answer "what are stocks" then you definitely shouldn't be involved in them.
