What does it mean to 'invest in shares'?

Putting your money into a company usually via a stockmarket thereby owning part of a company's equity and thereby participating in the company's fortunes by way of dividends (distributed part of profits) and by capital appreciation.

As part of the co-ownership, common stock holders will have voting rights and a share in the company's profits through dividends and capital appreciation. To evaluate a stock, you may either use technical analysis which involves the use of charts, or fundamental analysis which involves analyzing company financials, management and prospects.

It means giving a certain quantity of money to a company or business in exchange for ownership of a portion of the company that can rise in value over time, of which you can sell it for profit, or use as leverage for influence inside the company.
