The opposition often stems from a deep misunderstanding of the basic economics of patents. If you don't reward inventors for making the public disclosure of their inventions, why should they share their knowledge with the world? Why not keep it a trade secret? Some liberals would rather have everyone die of an easily curable disease than see any pharmaceutical company own the exclusive rights to sell the cure for a limited time.
