Best Long Term Investing Option? S&P 500?

What your looking for is Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund (VFINX)

But it has an entry cost of $3,000 to start. Another way to go is

with Schwab S&P 500 Index fund (SWPPX) for an entry cost

of $100.

So I've been looking around and I have a few questions. First, what's the best long term investing option? Something that allows you to add additional funds to either monthly or annually, and something longterm like 10-20 years. The S&P 500 caught my eye, its average return is almost 13% which isnt bad.

Also, depending on your opinions would it be best to talk to someone locally to set it up or is it something you can do online?

Also, one last question I couldn't find online. With the S&P 500 is there a fix amount I have to deposit each month? Or can I add has much/little I want? (has long has its over X amount)?
