Can I still buy bitcoins?

Posted at: 2014-12-05
Does anybody have any experience with this?

Is it still a good investment?

How do I get me some?

Of course you can buy them there are plenty of exchanges that will exchange bitcoins for other forms of cryptocurrency, or directly for dollars, euros or pounds etc. Are they still a good investment? I certainly think so. A lot of people think that because the price has sky rocketed from 10 to 600 dollars in the past year and a half that people buying into bitcoin now have missed the party. I don't think that's true at all I think bitcoin's best days are still ahead of it. Did you know that, in the world, there are currently only 2 million people who hold at least some bitcoin? We are still very early adopters and as bitcoin goes mainstream, the price can only go up. 5 years from now, $600 a coin will probably look like bargain basement prices, my own personal hunch is a value about 200 to 500 times what it is today.

You don't say where you live but if you are American then Coinbase is a good place apparently. Here in the UK I use bitbargain since I can buy bitcoin via my online banking it makes it really easy. There is cryptsy which I personally haven't used so I'm not sure about that. I would just Google "bitcoin exchange" and see if you find an exchange you like the look of, and just stick with that one.

If you are buying for long term storage like I do, do NOT store your bitcoins on an online wallet or on a bitcoin client like multibit, and certainly not in your android app. This is fine for small amounts but if you want to safely store large amounts of bitcoin long term, look into paper wallets. There are youtube tutorials on how to make these its actually pretty straightforward, and what these give you is secure offline storage so you cannot have your bitcoins stolen by hackers. I take it you've heard of MtGox? Those people would never have lost their bitcoins if they had kept them in paper wallets.

Bitcoin is far from a sure thing. It might go **** up. But I don't think it will. Its been through the fire enough times to prove its pretty resilient, and if it takes off, then the sky is the limit. There's only 21 million possible bitcoins in the world, imagine it had a billion users (which is only 1/3rd the number of devices that run java).

Of course you can.

Just Google 'buying butcoins' and take your pick.

Are they a good investment? Hmm. they are highly speculative. More and more companies are agreeing to accept them as payment. But the big attraction will possibly be as a currency for small, high frequency, machine to machine payments. I think this is the biggest opportunity for bitcoins.

If you want to trade bitcoin actively use one of the exchanges.
