You buy gold when the price is low. Then sell the gold when the price is high. The two main problems here is, 1. You cannot accurately predict where the price will go, so there is no guarantee that you will make a gain.
2. You would need to buy and sell in bullion quantities to make any difference to your financial position

there are two ways, you can look at the market and speculate weather or not the price of gold is going to increase. you then buy the commodity (gold in this case) and wait for an increase in the price of gold. when the prices increases you sell it and make money. Remember the price can also decrease and it will take a massive amount of money to buy enough gold to make any decent level of proffit.
the second way is to trade gold as a financial derivative. basically you can borrow some one elses money to trade with and you keep the diffrance. you never actually hold the gold yourself but still make money without the risk and massive investment from actually buying the gold.
