The word CAP is short for Capital

The Total Capital of a company defines its class

A small cap company has a total capital greater than 250 million but under 2 Billion dollars.

a Mid Cap over 2 but under 10 Billion Dollars.

Market capitalization

Large cap over 10 billion

Mid cap over 2 Billion

small cap over 250 milllion
