It has been down for several weeks now (about 3 months). When it first stopped working, the Java applet would load successfully without producing the security warning. The tool would send valid screening requests to the reports.finance.yahoo.com server, but the response from Yahoo was a useless error message containing no results, which caued the applet to present a blank screen to the end-user. When this happened, I was surprised to see very few comments from its public user base. But Yahoo must have noticed that something was wrong because, shortly afterward, the applet started failing to load altogether and the response from the server was also different (leading me to believe that something changed). For example, the screener would send a request like this: http://reports.finance.yahoo.com/wr?a0=2... (list of all symbols on the NASDAQ exchange) and the server returned the following response:

Server Connection Closed

---------------------------------------...

Description: The server "reports.finance.yahoo.com" closed the connection before the transaction was completed.

---------------------------------------...

After observing this behavior I tested the underlying protocol while logged in with my Yahoo account. Lo and behold, everything started working at the network level: the requests, the responses, etc. However, I still could not get the screener itself to load while logged in. It continued to produce the same Java Security Exception. Later, I tested the client-server traffic again, this time with an unauthorized browser session (not logged in) and it worked. I was able to get a full listing of all NASDAQ symbols. So it appears to be intermittently operational. Lately, the only thing that has been consistent is that the Java applet fails to load, whether you are logged in or not. So anyone directly using the Yahoo Finance Java Screener is pretty much out of luck. It's unfortunate, but Yahoo has always had very little respect or regard for those who depend on this tool to trade.
