A reputable coin/bullion dealer. Look for a dealer who quotes a two-way price (buying and selling). I would advise dealing with people in person. My son recently sold a gold sovereign over the phone and was quoted a reasonable price. When we delivered it to the company the chap inspected it and said it wasn't mint condition so lowered the price. This is ridiculous as the price usually quoted is for the value of the gold not as a collectable coin so any minor imperfections wouldn't make any difference. But he had us over a barrel because we had travelled a distance to see them (and we wanted the money!)
Now US eagles come in different sizes but if you take the 1oz that is 1oz of gold content. The coins weigh more than 1oz but are 22k
So 1oz (Troy) of gold on the spot market is currently around $1315 so this is a good starting point.
Believe it or not, but the best place to find gold coins at a fair
price is on eBay.
