Why do you WANT a piece of paper (which can be lost, damaged, or destroyed, rendering the stock worthless) rather than a book entry (which exists on multiple Servers as data so can always be recovered)?

Some brokers are now demanding up to $500 to issue a stock certificate. Is there any way to have "street name" shares registered as shares of record and get a stock certificate from someone else?
