Don't bother with cryptocurrency anymore. They're not really going to head anywhere for a long time, due to regulations in place. As long as BTC has essentially capped off and isn't really moving, the rest of the cryptocurrencies will be bottlenecked by its performance.

As for penny stocks, if you're seriously planning to invest in them, look for ones that increase yearly, and have good fundamentals. Ones that have consistently good news are reasonably good to test the waters with, too. But generally, you should probably stick with $6-10 stocks that increase yearly, since they generally have room to increase.
