How does Morningstar get its ratings of mutual funds?

Here are a couple of links on the Morningstar site which should answer your questions:

1. http://corporate.morningstar.com/US/docu...

2. Enter any fund on Morningstar and then click on "Data Definition".

3. http://www.morningstar.com/InvGlossary/m...

A funds rating is simply a comparison with other funds in the same category. Based on total earnings.

5 stars means it is in the top 20%

4 stars means it's in the next 20%

etc

Past performance against other funds in its class.

Risk verses return on your money.

A fund that gets a 5 star gold is the best over time.

I couldn't find anything on the Morningstar website. What factors enter into the ratings (returns, risk, fees, etc.) and what factors are most heavily weighted, i.e., what factors have the most influence on the ratings?
