Before you spend $0.01 on any investment, you must know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and how to do it. Before you invest in any security, the first investment you should make is in yourself, and the best investment you can make is by educating yourself.

Begin your education by learning why you should invest and the importance of being able to make your own decisions or how the pro’s make theirs. Start your education by reading “Investing for Dummies” by Eric Tyson.

To continue your education select some of the following

Websites that can provide instructions and help with procedures and terminology are Investopedia - http://www.investopedia.com/ http://www.investorshub.com/ and 1 Source for Stocks - http://www.1source4stocks.com/info/stock... or Smart Money

http://www.smartmoney.com/

Visit some of the more professional websites like Zacks Research - http://www.zacks.com/ Schaeffer’s http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/ Investors Business Daily - http://www.investors.com/default.htm?fro...

Some of these web sites will have advertisers who are worth looking into also. And remember, if they offer free information, get it.

And when you think you want to invest/trade, try some paper trading to test your skills without spending you money http://simulatorinvestopedia.com/ http://www.moneyworks4me.com/

and/or http://www.tradingsimulation.com/

When you think your ready to actually invest your capital, visit some the websites of the more popular firms like Fidelity, Scottrade, TDAmeritrade, Schwab and see what iste appeals to you. You can open an account and you are then ready to go right after you deposit some money in the account you just opened.

You at least have made the right decision to start investing, this is the first big step and it won’t be your last. Keep taking those steps forward and along the way never take the advice from people that are not in the market or try to tell you not to invest.

Good luck on your journey, study hard and you’ll invest well.

be sure to do some 'as if' trades in advance to assure you are confident about your strategy, meaning that you would put it on paper but not execute the trade, to get the feel for this

at the same time, do some of your own reading for yourself, to understand the market. read all of Jim Cramer's investment books. watch cnbc for market updates. read the wall street journal. do not be ignorant of what it is that affects the stock market.

I have $1500 (and hoping to get an additional $5,000 later). I don't want to day trade, I am not looking for massive returns or any of that .I just need a solid, reliable and a reasonably priced trading platform to buy stocks that I plan to hold for a long time.

I should also mention, I already have a 401k and a Roth, plus a couple CD's. I want to invest in some stocks while I'm (relatively) young to have a diversity of investments.I would only be investing with money that I am willing to loose but would prefer to only loose about 30% if at all.

I've been playing to stock simulator for a couple years and am generally OK at picking stocks on that so I want to get acquainted with real life stock investing. (yes,,,I know it's nothing like real life but it has sparked my interest and gotten me familiar with some of the basic concepts of investing).

Any suggestions of a platform/website/service? I've looked at E-Trade, Ameritrade, Share-builder and a couple others but I'm curious to see what folks on here think....

Thanks for reading this long-winded question and thanks in advance for any advice.
