BRK owns a pile of assets and liabilities like any other company. The value of BRK stock is simply about how the world values those piles. Not sure why you think it ought to be harder to value ownership of Dairy Queen than it would be to value Dairy Queen...

can someone please explain to me how Berkshire Hathaway works. I know what stocks they own, but im wondering how does their portfolio go up and down since they own a lot of stocks like 99% of dairy queen and much more. Also does warren buffet invest in his own company or he cant do that. if he cant how does he make money of Berkshire Hathaway. im basically asking how does that stock go up and won since it owns other stocks? Also how does warren buffet make money of that company since he owns it? Try to be simple as possible because im new to this investing thing. :)
