Terrific that you want to start early. Even better that you found something logical (index funds) rather than get-rich-quick scams.

Two great firms to invest with are Vanguard and Fidelity. Low costs. Broad product line. Good customer service geared to helping novices.

I'm currently 18, freshman in college, and have not started working but will start soon. I've done a modest amount of research in the types of investing and the risks associated with each. Right now, I'm thinking of starting with an index mutual fund but I have no idea how to start in general. Do I call a broker or online transactions, I should be aware of before investing, things like that. I would consider myself decently well off with a few thousand in my checking account and tolerant to risk. Thanks in advance.
