I own some target date funds, but to be honest I'm not that crazy about them. Like many simplistic investment allocation programs, they make the fatal assumption that bonds are stable in principle and risk free. In today's interest rate environment that could be very, very dangerous. The Fed is going to start boosting interest rates by the end of 2014, mid-2015 at the latest. Even a 0.5% increase in rates will put a 5% dent in long term bond funds. That 5% will be hard to get back.
I suggest something else I do: buy 4 core Vanguard index funds, 25% each of your holdings. Their total bond market fund should be one, but don't be afraid to reallocate if bonds start going in the crapper. I also have their 500 index fund, dividend appreciation index fund, and then split the last 25% between large cap index and European index.
Lifecycle funds are usually a terrible choice. Stick with an index based mutual fund, such as, Fidelity Spartan 500 Index Fund (FUSEX). It closely tracks performance of the S&P 500 Index and costs just 0.10% per year.
I really recomend you to visit this web, If you really want to make money.

I am looking for a lifecycle fund for my own personal investment, not retirement. I would like a lifecycle fund made up primarily of index funds, not actively managed mutual funds. Does anyone know of any good ones? I will need access to the money in about 18 years.
The only one I've found so far is the TIA CREFF lifecycle index fund but the customer representative said that fund is only available for retirement accounts.
