S&P 500 index is ^GSPC in yahoo finance?

What do the GSPC letters stand for?

i'm sure standard and poors is part of it, but rest?

I have wondered this forever! Perhaps this is the best explanation:

"What is the difference between .GSPC and .SPX?

GSPC is the RIC for the Reuters-calculated index for S&P 500 Index. SPX is the S&P 500 Index calculated by CBOE. Both. GSCP and SPX are calculated in the same way, but the fact that they update at different frequencies is why their values vary."

I listed the source I found below, cannot vouge for the reliability of it, but I figured it had something to do with the calculating entity.
