Venture capitalists who are any good do withering due diligence.....

I've heard of regular consumers getting scammed into investing a lot of money but I was wondering if ever a venture capitalist would get scammed into investing into a non-existing company?

If so, do they lose their job? Do venture capitalist work for themselves for for a boss?
