How does the internet make markets less competitive?

First, you have to define "competition."

Let's take books. Maybe 20 years ago, each town had a bookstore, or two or three. Then the Internet came along, as did Amazon. Because Amazon has most books at a substantial discount and you can price-shop (and it's convenient), a lot of independent bookstores have gone out of business. So if you look at the sheer number of bookstores, you'll see the numbers have declined a lot--so many would define that as less competition.

On the other hand, prices have dropped and there's a far greater number of choices of books online. Some would say that's more competitive.

Hope that helps.

it doesn't - it makes it MORE competitive because it's easier to enter the market

In a real trading facility its basically sweaty suited men shouting out what they want. Online, it's obviously more calm and peaceful as well as your ability to research as much information as you want before purchasing the stock
