The Dow Jones Industrial Average is 30 of the largest industrial company's stocks kinda averaged together . They tinker with the numbers and the members every so often so it is not a straight forward formula . It is meant to be an indicator of the strength of that sector of the economy and is followed by several index funds .
Not as simple as you may think. The Dow Jones is a collection of 30 of the best selling stocks on the stock market, and the Dow Jones average is the average cost of these 30 stocks. However, from time to time one or two of these stocks will be replaced by others. Click on the link below for more details.
The short answer is $ 4.9 Trillion. You can verify at http://american-ticker.com/finance/ratio... by looking up all the Dow components which are 30 stocks and add their market cap together. But the long answer is it depends. Do you want to count only float shares? Or do you want to consider the way the index is calculated? $4.9 Trillion dollars assume outstanding shares and present prices, but since price fluctuate, you could find the Dow Jones Industrial average reaching 5 Trillion by year end, given that it will continue to do well.

If you want to know the total cost click on each stock and add up the market cap of each company. It will change from day to day.
