Easy...just take it to a place that buys used gold; tell them that you are considering selling it, but it does have emotional attachment.
They will test it, tell you what type of gold and gold content, what they will pay for it and maybe a bit more info.
Take it to a jeweler. A pawn shop will always low ball you on the value. Gold is by K and weight.

Taking it to a pawn shop is the best way to go.
Usually if you pee on gold it turns a sort of teal color. That should tell you if it's real or not.
