What is some good stock advice?

That's not really what we do here. We are not fortune tellers. Well, shucks, you knew that already, but to be clear, nobody can predict the future.

So when you say you "need" 10 companies, just pick 10. Your picks will be as good as the next person. There is no shortage of stock recommendations on TV and the internet. Whether they will go up or down is another matter. But nobody "knows." Even the "experts" can't get it right any more than a monkey throwing darts.

"Despite what these professionals claim, it is not actually possible to predict the movement of stocks and other financial instruments. According to William J. Bernstein's book "The Four Pillars of Investing," market strategists have historically been incorrect about 77% of the time."

If you use someone else's picks, then you miss the point of the exercise, and you miss the opportunity to learn something.

It really depends on whether you think the market will continue to the downside, or regroup and rally again. Almost all stocks went down hard on Friday with the Dow down over 300 pts. If this continues, no matter what stocks you choose, you will loose money unless you bet on the downside. Can you short stocks?

It is possible to make money on the downside by either shorting a stock or buying what is called an inverse etf.

Here is a list of short or inverse etf's. The most popular is SDS.

You can also bet on the upside of the overall market with a bullish etf, like the SPY.

So if you think the market will continue downward, buy SDS, but if you think the market will continue higher, buy the SPY. It's a lot easier than picking individual stocks, which it seems you're having trouble doing anyway.

Trying to time the market is not much better than a 50/50 shot, but it's fun to try.
