Reading books is great and here are a few really good titles.

The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham

Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits by Philip Fischer

Value Investing by James Montier

How to Think Like Benjamin Graham and Invest Like Warren Buffett by Lawrence A. Cunningham

Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Taleb

The Misbehavior of Markets by Benoit Mandelbrot (This is a must read if you want real insight into how markets work)

The last on the list by Mandelbrot is the best explanation you will find regarding how markets work.

But, books are not all you will need. To really learn you might want to take a couple of accounting classes (if you don't have any already) at a local college. You are also going to want to read company's regulatory filing the make with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). These filing can be found by searching the EDGAR database. Here is a link to the location on the SEC's website:

If this sounds like too much you can always invest in index funds that will ensure you at least receive the market rate of return. Vanguard provides low cost funds that will allow you to minimize the amount you pay in fees.

I personally choose to do the work and reap the 17% percent per year return that I have received for the past twenty years.

The best book ever written for the stock market investing for the average person is "One Up On Wall Street", by Peter Lynch.

The book is thin because his great message is simple and easy to understand. He even includes a check list as an aid to finding good stocks.

Well, for retirement, you should be investing in quality mutual fund with a proven track record. You should o so in a retirement vehicle like. 401(k) or an Zira.

I am looking into investing in the stock-market as one of my investing-to-early retirement projects and I started reading into articles that said a variety of things such as:

Be sure to have all bills up to date

Set aside an amount that you are comfortable using for investment purposes

Above all, learn how to read an income chart and some other forms of documents or graphs.

My question is would googling be the only route to learning about terminology, where/how/when to invest or are there big books out there, videos or even small programs I could sign up for?
