Rates on bonds and fixed income are extremely low and as rates rise, any investments will lose value as interest rates rise. You are better off in high quality dividend paying stocks (not mutual funds) which pay dividends each quarter and have a history of increasing their dividends annually. These are stocks like PG (pays about 3.1% annual dividend, but raises their dividends. Something to consider, eh.
Sounds like a plan. Why not.
You could always buy/rent a cheaper apartment, and only use a bit of your cash for your investments. Don't speculate it all at once, unless you know you'll earn money off of it.
Right now NY market. Is generously priced.......... Besides that real estate is good for lanldlords.....if you buy and rent you'll come out ok. .......... As an investment buy and live there not an asset it is a liabilabiltey .....
yes. you should be able to get more than 3% on your money
example: dividend yield for AT&T stock is over 5%.
I live in NY and I just inherited a total of about $400k. I'm deciding whether I should use that to buy an apartment in cash or invest to get extra money and rent a better apartment in Manhattan. I just really want to live in Manhattan. I assume a diversified portfolio of bonds, dividends, mutual funds, etc. should be able to get me at least a 3% annual return (adjusted for inflation). That would be about an extra $1,000 each month. Would that work?
