"...$2200 dollars at the beginning of 2001 in two different stocks, Remanar Corp. and bakery Brothers. Remanar Corp. Earned 6% simple interest for the year, While bakery brothers and earned 9%. In total, Melanie earned $153 dollars "

Let x stand for the weight (in decimal form) of Bakery Brothers "BB" and the remaining weight (1 - x) is the weight of Reminar "R"...

Total Return = 153 / 2200 = 0.06955

0.09x + 0.06(1 - x) = 0.06955

0.09x + 0.06 - 0.06x = 0.06955

0.03x = 0.00955

x = 0.00955 / 0.03

x = 0.31818

Amount invested in BB: 2200 * 0.31818 = $700

Amount invested in R: 2200 - 700 = $1500

Check math:

700(0.09) + 1500(0.06)

= 63 + 90 = $153

Voila!
