Historically, a well-diversified portfolio should yield 8% annually.

I know this is a broad question but what would be a reasonable estimate? In an average year, say a person has a diverse stock market portfolio (excluding mutual funds). What would be a reasonable estimate of the average annual growth of that portfolio? 5% maybe?
